More about Play Therapy

Jennifer R. Mertz-Turner, LMHC, MAC, RPT-S is nationally certified as a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor by the American Association for Play Therapy. She has extensive training in how to use “play therapy” appropriately to work with children, teens and adults.

Counseling children requires therapists to step beyond traditional “talk” therapy into the world and language of children. Therapists who have specific training in “play therapy” understand that children communicate best when they can express themselves in a way that is most natural for them – play. Children can use toys or art for their words. In the metaphors of play, they can share their thoughts, feelings and experiences when “words” are just not enough. As children learn to expand their emotional vocabulary during the counseling relationship, play is a natural process that:

• Builds trust and mastery
• Fosters learning and acceptable behaviors
• Regulates emotions
• Reduces anxieties
• Encourages open communication
• Elevates spirit and self esteem
• Promotes creative thinking and problem-solving

For more information, visit the Association for Play Therapy website at https://www.a4pt.org/ . Jennifer offers play therapy supervision and trainings for counseling professionals.
